The Different Types of Roofing Materials

It may be strange to ask what the different type of roofing materials that are available for residential home, but we are going to answer that question.  Hey, there is no such thing as a dumb question, and we are glad you asked.

 Types of Roofing Materials

There are several kinds of roofs in use today around Fort Worth, TX and the type of roof you have is largely based on the design of your home, the area you live, and the age of your home.

The most common types of roofs are:

  •  Asphalt
  •  Wood Shingles/Shakes
  •  Metal
  •  Clay
  •  Slate

Asphalt is the typical three-tap or architectural shingle that is the most common across the United States.  The shingle itself is made up of felt, paper, or some other composite material, which is covered with asphalt and small granules.  The granules reflect UV light from and prevent the breakdown of the asphalt covering.

Wood Shingle, sometimes referred to as shakes, are typically made of cedar.  Cedar roofs were more common in the past and are now usually found in older homes, but are less common today than asphalt shingles.

Metal roofs are becoming more popular, but are still rare in residential construction.  Metal roofing cost more than asphalt shingles but can last more than twice as long.  Metal roofing material now comes in patterns that may be more appropriate for residential neighborhoods.

Clay is popular in certain parts of the country, largely in the Southwest, and on certain styles of house architecture.  Clay roofs are expensive and because they clay is so heavy it requires proper structural support before installation.

Slate roofs are very high quality and last for over 100 years, but the material and the installation cost are extremely high.
